Curtis Salgado |
The story’s been told of Curtis Salgado’s fleeting fame as the inspiration for John Belushi’s Blues Brothers character; (the first Blues Brother release was dedicated to Curtis). But, anyone who’s followed the career of this 30 some year veteran knows that there’s so very much more to Curtis Salgado than this footnote in show business history.
Those in the know view this longtime fixture of the Pacific Northwest Blues scene as a dynamic vocalist, a vibrant harp player, and one of the few performers that can convincingly combine Blues, Rock & Roll, Funk, Soul, and Gospel. There’s a pulse that reverberates through everything Salgado touches. Whether it’s one of his own insightful compositions or taking a seemingly unlikely cover like The Beatles “I’ll Be Back” and giving it a Memphis makeover, you sense something special as he draws you in. To put it simply, the man has Soul!
He’s displayed this elusive quality throughout every phase of his career including lending his considerable vocal and harp talents as co-leader of Robert Cray’s first band, and doing the same as the front man for Roomful of Blues. On his own, Curtis is a four time W.C. Handy / Blues Music Award nominee including three 2009 Blues Music Award nominations – for “Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year” and “Soul Blues Album of the Year”, and “Song of The Year” on the strength of the outstanding collection, Clean Getaway. The disc contains “20 Years of B.B. King,”(written by Curtis), that in addition to earning him the “Song of The Year” nomination also provided an opportunity for Curtis to perform the tune at the BMA’s celebration and have none other than B.B. himself step on stage to play the solo!
The uninitiated will come to realize very quickly that the charismatic Salgado is at his best on stage where he can make the human connection live. Here he’s free to stretch out; roaring, cooing, scatting and shaping every note as if it might be his last or blowing off the lid with his supercharged harp work.
This will be Curtis Salgado’s first Toronto appearance since his performance at The Beaches International Jazz Festival in 2005.
