Scott McCord, who last appeared at the Festival with Reuben Cherry, returns with a brand new band, The Bonafide Truth, a new CD, and a fresh approach.
Riding the laurels of their first place finish in the Toronto Blues Society 2008 Talent Search and their strong showing at the 2009 Blues Summit Showcase, Scott and the band will be making their first major Canadian festival appearance.
The outstanding CD, Blues For Sunshine, was borne out of a time in Scott’s life that demanded a project in which he could invest all of his energies. It’s a cathartic work that started out innocently enough with McCord writing the decidedly personal eight original songs that appear on the album on acoustic guitar. The songs were then placed in the able hands of The Skydiggers’ Michael Johnston, (producer and keyboards), who polished the gems and helped McCord assemble the musicians that play on the CD and make up The Bonafide Truth.
For those with a need to categorize, Blues For Sunshine, an expression of McCord’s love for Southern Soul, reaches past those boundaries, and can best be described as Punk Soul intertwined with Pop sensibilities. Everything revolves around McCord’s tender vocals that recall Eric Clapton circa 461 Ocean Boulevard – particularly on the title cut and “Let It Roll” – as he leads the eight piece collective through his highly introspective offerings.
The toughest cut on the disc, the strutting “Trouble”, comes closest to replicating the band’s live sound. Here McCord assumes a confident, sturdy persona in total command of his surroundings. That’s Scott McCord! And that’s what you can expect at Waterfront Blues!
