The Mississippi Hippies
Main Stage - June 11, 2006

The Mississippi Hippies (The Brothers Leggat: Bassist Hugh, and Lead Guitarist Gordie, along with John Dickie, Lead Vocals and Harmonica) has been several decades in the making. These musical Canadian veterans, by way of Toronto, have their souls firmly immersed in the rich Delta Soil that cultivated the likes of Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf and Bo Diddley. The Mississippi Hippies honed their collective chops in the wide-open late 60's and early 1970's. A time period referred to as the "Toronto Sound': When Rock n' Roll Kulture ruled, and Toronto's Yonge St . strip was the place to find the music. Flash-forward to the present n' you have The Mississippi Hippies. They've taken the Blues kicking n' screaming from whatever museum it's been hiding out in, while simultaneously breathing new life into it. Their self titled CD on Big Smoke Records has the fire of that time period, with some of the most engaging songwriting (all songs written by Leggat / Leggat / Dickie) that's been heard in many years from Toronto's music scene.

"We wanted to make a recording that has a timeless quality to the songs and production," exclaims Mississippi Hippies' producer Hugh Leggat. "Gordie's got some cool vintage instruments and amps from the 60's that really helped us get down that sound we wanted. Then we went in the studio with the same production ideas that go back to Chess and Sun Recordings." The culmination is an energy-laden masterpiece with vibes that just won't let up!

The Mississippi Hippies are gearing up for a busy 2006. Performing in support of their debut release, come to the Distillery Blues Festival for Rockin' Blues that's got the goodtimes comin' atcha!
